President's Message

JoAnn Stock, CFRE
President

AFP is committed to helping you and your organization succeed! While economic uncertainties continue, sharpening your skills, connecting with other fundraisers and figuring out how to do more with less should be at the top of everyone’s list.  To succeed, you must be sharper than ever, staying on top of new trends and best practices, bringing innovative and creative thinking to your organization and operating by the highest ethical imperatives.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is the professional association of individuals and organizations that generates philanthropic support for a wide variety of charitable institutions. Founded in 1960, AFP advances philanthropy through its 30,000 members in 207 chapters throughout the world, and is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2010.   AFP Mahoning/Shenango Chapter is proud to be a part of this outstanding Association!

As Paulette Maehara, CFRE, CAE, president and CEO of AFP says, “Despite the headlines about Wall Street and the financial markets, we as fundraisers should not lose sight of the fact that giving is a way for communities to pull together. While the economic forecasts are uncertain right now, what is quite certain is the capacity of people to lend a hand and support institutions of all kinds. We hope you’ll use AFP as a resource in garnering vital support for your organization in what may be a wild ride over the next few months.”

Benefits of AFP membership include:

Through the AFP website, members can take courses online, participate in online discussions and renew their membership.

  • Inspiration for meeting the challenges of today. AFP’s Fundraising in a Difficult Economy and online Fundraising Survival Kit bring together the best advice from fundraisers around the world on how to connect with donors in the current environment.

 Local/National Updates

Philanthropy News Updates

(gleaned from the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning website)

Donations to Haiti  (January 22, 2010)  Both the House and Senate have now approved H.R. 4462, which would allow taxpayers to make cash contributions to Haiti relief programs until March 1, 2010 and claim those contributions on their 2009 income tax return. The legislation also specifies that contributions made via text message can be deducted and filers would need to show a telephone bill to prove the donation.

Estate Tax  (January 6, 2010)  Congress adjourned for 2009 without extending the estate tax. It is possible lawmakers will vote to reinstate the 2009 estate tax rules and make them retroactive to January 1, 2010. Republican lawmakers may also try to push for a tax rate lower than the 2009 level and insist that it last for at least two years.

IRA Rollover  (January 6, 2010)  Both Democratic and Republican leaders have indicated they will try to retroactively extend the IRA charitable rollover provision within the first three months of 2010, although there continues to be significant disagreement between the Senate and House over how to offset the costs of any tax “extender” provisions.

Limit on Charitable Deductions  (May 20, 2009)  The nonprofit sector has united in response to President Obama's budget proposal to limit the charitable deduction for families earning over $250,000. On May 11, the Treasury Department released its "green book," which outlines the Administration's fiscal year 2010 tax proposals. This publication, like the budget blueprint released by the White House in February, proposes reducing from 35% to 28% the tax rate at which taxpayers earning more than $250,000 could claim charitable deductions. The proposal has faced widespread opposition from groups representing the charitable sector and lawmakers have also gone on-the-record against it.

The Partnership for Philanthropic Planning believes that tax incentives for charitable giving send an essential message about the value our country places on voluntary giving and the important role of charities in meeting critical individual and community needs. The true beneficiaries of the charitable donation are not the generous Americans who make charitable gifts, but those in need who are served by the work of charitable organizations.
